Many of the serious diseases can be prevented by a healthy lifestyle. Avoid smoking. Alcohol should only be consumed in moderate quantities. Diet and Exercise are the important factors.
Exercise improves your health and makes you feel good! Even a moderate amount, like a brisk walk every day, which costs nothing, is much better then sitting in a chair all day. joining an exercise class, group or club can make exercise more sociable and enjoyable.
Smoking is the single, largest preventable cause of ill health in this country. It causes heart and lung disease and some cancers. If you would like help in stopping, ask the doctor or nurse.
As small amount of alcohol a day does you no harm but if its more than a small amount you may be damaging your health. Alcohol is measured in units. One unit is equivalent to: half a pint of beer, a small glass of wine, or a single pub spirit measure.
A sensible limit is 14 units for women and 21 units for men per week.
A healthy diet controls weight and prevents heart disease and some bowel conditions. We have leaflets to advise you.
