Sexual Health

We provide a wide range of contraceptive services, including pills, implants, coils and other long-acting reversible methods of contraception. Do speak to a member of the team as contraceptive advice is tailored to the individual patient. It may be a nurse or doctor who you are advised to speak to.

What are my contraceptive options?

Contraception can help to prevent pregnancy and some sexually transmitted infections (STIs). There are lots of types of contraception to choose from depending on the type of person you are, your lifestyle and the type of sex you are having.

CONTRACEPTION – DEVON SEXUAL HEALTH

Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) Screening

We provide testing and free treatment for STIs, such as Chlamydia. Chlamydia is the most common bacterial STI in the UK, around two thirds of women and half of all men with chlamydia won’t have any obvious symptoms.

If you are aged 25 and under you can pick up a testing kit from the surgery, or register for a free of charge home test through the National Chlamydia Screening Programme.  If you test positive you will need to be seen at the surgery or a sexual health clinic.

If you are over 25 you need to pop into the surgery or a sexual health clinic for testing, the tests are still free of charge.

Cervical Smears

Cervical screening is offered to all women between 25 and 64. Regular screening every 3-5 years is the best way to detect changes to the cervix early. Early detection and treatment can prevent cancer.

You will be sent a reminder when your Cervical Screening is due and you can book an appointment with one of our nurses to have this done at the Practice.

Emergency Contraception

You can obtain emergency contraception from any of the local pharmacies.  Alternatively, you can see the Doctor.

Emergency contraception pills need to be started within seventy-two hours of unprotected sex.  A coil can be fitted up to five days after unprotected sex.

NHS Health Checks

The NHS Health Check is a health check-up for adults in England aged 40-74. It’s designed to spot early signs of stroke, kidney disease, heart disease, type 2 diabetes or dementia. As we get older, we have a higher risk of developing one of these conditions. An NHS Health Check helps find ways to lower this risk. Patients who are not already diagnosed with one of the above conditions will be invited, once every five years, to make an appointment in one of our designated clinics.

Long Term Condition Clinics

Our nurses are specialists in health promotion and Long Term Conditions.  This includes conditions such as:

  • Asthma
  • Diabetes
  • Hypertension
  • Obesity
  • Stroke/TIA (mini stroke)
  • Stop smoking advice
  • Heart disease
  • Epilepsy

Patients will be informed when they are due to attend for these appointments, usually on an annual basis.

Minor Surgery

Minor surgery procedures such as joint injections and implants can be carried out at the Practice by doctors. Please enquire at reception for the next available session.

Disease Management

To ensure that you get the best treatment available, we regularly monitor the therapy of those patients with long-term conditions.

We may invite you to make an appointment with your doctor or specialist nurse if changes may be appropriate.

With some conditions – such as asthma and diabetes – regular checks are essential to detect changes, at least once or twice a year.
